MAKE
WAY FOR BOOKS
at Home Studies
show that having access to a wide variety
of reading materials
is essential if a child is to develop
into a strong reader.
In fact, the only behavioral measure
that correlates significantly
with reading scores is the
number of books in the home. Many
of the children in our preschool programs come from homes where there
are few or no
books. Yet early experiences with books - handling them, looking
at the pictures, listening to the story - are essential to
fostering a love of reading. Young children without books
in their homes are at a disadvantage in developing the
essential readiness
skills to be successful in school. Through our Books at Home
Program, we present children with new paperback books for them
to keep.
The
primary funding for this program is provided by our partnership
with Reading
is Fundamental (RIF). During the 2006-2007 school
year we held 3 book distributions. At each distribution,
each child
was
able to pick a book to take home. We gave away 7,560 books
to 2,520 children at 31 preschools and childcare centers.
