MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS
Preschool Program

MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS provides childcare centers and preschools with lending libraries of hard-cover books as funding allows. Childcare center personnel are expected to attend training sessions to learn how to read aloud to children most effectively and how to use books to their fullest benefit in the classroom. To date, we have placed libraries in 102 preschools and childcare centers. In addition, 20 centers have storytime volunteers who share their love of reading by reading aloud to children once a week.

FIRST FOCUS ON KIDS-Hands on Quality Project

Hands on Quality is a collaborative effort funded by United Way of Tucson to improve the quality of childcare in our community. Forty-six centers have volunteered to participate this past year. Other partners in the project besides MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS are Child and Family Resources, Parent Connection, Pima County Health Department, Reach out and Read Southern Arizona, and Pima Community College & Early Chidhood Studies.

Through this project MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS provied over 1,952 new board, and hardcover picture books to these centers. During the 2007-2008 school year, 99 childcare providers attended early literacy seminars conducted by the MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS staff. The introductory sesssion was "A Healthy Child Is Read to Every Day." Main topics included the importance of reading aloud, how to effectively share books with young children, and how to increase parent involvement.

The second session was "What Is Reading Readiness?" The six reading readiness skills identified by the Arizona Department of Education were explained. strategies were presented to help preschool children develop these skills.
