MAKE
WAY FOR BOOKS
Summer Reading Buddies Program
A study published in the Review of Educational
Research concluded that all young people experience learning losses
when they do not engage in educational activities during the summer.
Moreover, limited resource students experience greater summer learning
losses than their higher-income peers. On average, limited resource
students experience more than two months’ loss in reading
achievement.
The Summer Reading Buddies program
addresses this concern by serving childcare centers that enroll
school-age children during the summer months. Kits are provided
to these sites that contain books, interactive extension activities,
game boards to chart reading progress, and incentive prizes.
The Summer Reading Buddies Program has been administered
by MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS since 2000. The program provides preschools
with themed hardcover books, games, incentive prizes, and book
activities designed to
enhance reading readiness. The activities develop Print Awareness,
Book Handling Skills, Phonological Awareness, Letter Knowledge,
Vocabulary Development, and Comprehension. The theme for 2008 is “Reading
Under the Big Top.” Over
500 preschoolers and school-age children are expected to participate.
Twice a week, older children and preschoolers are
teamed up to participate in book sharing sessions. MAKE WAY FOR
BOOKS staff show the school age children how to share books with
their Little Buddies. They learn how to ask prediction questions
about the story, how to discuss the books with preschoolers, and
how to record the title and author of each book they share together.
The program not only gives the Big Buddies practice in reading
and writing, but the Little Buddies look up to them as role models.
This summer’s program will culminate in a visit by a Clown
to each site where paperback books and certificates will be presented.
