The Early Literacy Resource Center for Southern Arizona

MWFB and the Children of
Southern Arizona Thank You!

MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS (MWFB) is fortunate to have a cadre of dedicated supporters who truly understand the importance of early literacy. Many supporters have contributed to MWFB since we held the first Storytime and put the first library in the first preschool nearly 14 years ago. Other supporters make small donations as often as they can. They believe that if we all give what we can afford, no matter how small the amount, we can bring about lifelong success for all children and lasting change for the entire community. It is your dedication to our most vulnerable citizens that is putting thousands of young children on the road to success every year. Thank you!

Why Early Literacy Is Important >>

"I support MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS because it is a very well-run organization with an exceptional staff and a highly effective model that is having measurable success with increasing early literacy skills among preschool children (especially those at risk). This will result in these children having a more successful school experience--an important foundation for future success."

–Jane Wilson, Social Venture Partners

"By educating teachers, parents, and preschoolers about the importance of reading together at an early age, at-risk, low-income children can become school ready by the time they enter kindergarten. MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS is a win-win program for donors and recipients. We all benefit in the long run when children are literate."

–Debbie and Ric Scripps

"I have been impressed with MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS' clear mission, good stewardship of resources, and creative spark."

–Wayne Peate, M.D., MWFB Board Member

"I give my time and money because MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS has effective, innovative, and flexible programs that foster early literacy. I have seen how these programs make a real, sustained difference in the lives of young children and their families."

–Jennifer J. Stewart, MWFB Board Member Emeritus

"It is your continued belief in our mission that makes it possible for children to enter kindergarten ready to succeed in school and in life."

–Dr. Mary Jan Bancroft, MWFB Founder and Executive Director

The Difference You Make

Your generous contributions help children like...

Slide 1

...4-year old Christina, who had no books of her own until she received "Llama, Llama Red Pajama" for free at a MWFB Story Town Family Literacy Festival. Christina keeps the book under her pillow, and her mom reads it to her every night.  They also check out books regularly from the public library now.

Slide 2

...1-year-old Little Ricky, who attends an infant care center with MWFB early literacy services while his father works hard to graduate from high school. Peek inside the center at lunchtime, and you will see Big Ricky reading "Moo, Baa, La La La" while delighting in his son's attempts to make animal sounds and turn pages.

Slide 3

...3-year-old Marcus, who spent the first two years of his life in foster care with no one to talk, sing, or read to him, until his adoptive parents enrolled him in a childcare center supported by the MWFB Preschool Program. Marcus has read-aloud time every day now at home and in child care, and he is finally beginning to talk, and laugh.

Slide 4

...4-year-old David, who always had plenty of smiles and hugs for his MWFB Storytime volunteer in preschool, even though his mother, father, and grandmother were all in prison on drug-related charges. David is 13 now. He loves books, is excelling in school, and says he is proud to be breaking the cycle of poverty and crime.

“A literate community,” says Mary Sanchez, “leads to really intelligent people growing up and taking over.” Sanchez, one of the first MWFB employees and currently a Pima County Public Library supervisor, gives generously, year after year.

Sweet BoyStill a Long, Long Way to Go

Half of the 70,000 children 0 to 5 years old in Pima County alone live in low-income homes with little or no access to books, read-aloud time, and quality early education. Please support early literacy.
